Comments This is my third trip to Dumaguete Resort renowned for esoteric critters living in clean muck in the black/brown sand along the Dauin Coast on the south-east part of Negros Island. Although I enjoy all types of diving conditions, I have always found something special about uncovering the fascinating critters of muck dives. I have come to appreciate the ‘clean muck’ of Dumaguete instead encountering goat burial grounds, batteries, dirty diapers, clothes etc. in Indonesia, (although Mucky Mosque is an outstanding site!). My dive buddy and I requested that divemaster Warfi guide us once again in this exciting search to uncover unusual inhabitants. Warfi’s keen spotting ability and patience as my buddy photographed and I observed critter behavior is supreme.

My eagerness was at its peak as I backrolled and descended, seeing the familiar large expanse of black sand. Clear visibility was around twenty to thirty feet. I quickly took out my essentials --magnifying glass and small torch and descended to my muck cruising depth of 2’ or less, keeping one eye out for a critter and another for Warfi’s discoveries. The search was on! That first day of three dives on Bahura, Bulak, and San Miguel N sites, revealed 2 ½ inch filefish, lots of shrimp: bubble coral, crinoid, commensal, skeleton, hairy, and several I could not identify. Warfi was the master finder of tiny crab, the porcelain being a favorite. Nudi’s were not plentiful, but worthy of an enthusiastic nod, especially the ¼ inch green leaf sheep (costasiella) nudi, and the stiliger.
