Comments When I travel to a high end resort, especially half way around the world, I have certain expectations. They are: a competent dive operation that doesn't restrict dives to the sites closest to the resort, comfortable accommodations, food safe to eat.

I hope my ratings for food and service and attitude will come as a surprise to many and don't reflect the usual experience people have at this resort. The food was beautifully presented if slightly under-seasoned. The service was uniformly exceptional so why the abysmal ratings. The answer is food poisoning and the response to it.

I was part of a group of 29. They were two other small groups. About two thirds of the guests got sick on the same day (our fifth day there) with the classic symptoms of E-coli poisoning. Several people were so sick they required medical treatment. EMT's were on site for at least two days. All of my group only ate at the resort.

The only expression of concern our group leader got was a comment from the resort manager was the hope that the resort would not get a lot of one star reviews. There has been no other acknowledgement, apology or offer of compensation.

The resort is located in the Sabang neighbourhood of Puerto Galera. A public alley runs through the resort and the waterfront promenade has to crossed to reach the dive boats. One has to deal with the vendors when going from one section of the resort to the other or to the dive boats. When the resort manager heard one of the vendors trying to sell items more nefarious than the usual souvenirs, he called the police and that vendor was not seen again.

The resort climbs a hillside, if you have problems with stairs, request one of the few poolside rooms. The resort architect seems to have been inspired by Antoni Gaudi. This includes the room interiors. The toilet is in a water closet. The shower has no door and is open to the room. The bed frames are part of the room structure. The mattresses are narrower than the frames. The table and chairs in the room were too small to be useful. There were only three electrical plugs in the room and they were not conveniently located.

The dive operation is one of the best run I have seen anywhere. The dive boats, like the resort in general, were lacking in comfort. They were small, difficult to board after a dive and had no sun protection. Five dives, including a night dive, are offered most days.

The water temperature was lower than normal for this time of year.

There was not a bad dive site. There was a mixture of reef and muck dives. The guides are skilled at finding the small stuff. The corals are healthy and colourful. Crinoids are plentiful, colourful and many are active during the day. The population of small reef fish is large. Larger fish, both adults and juveniles, are uncommon.

A day trip Isla Verde is highly recommended.

The camera room is well laid out but not air conditioned.

I cannot recommend this resort in spite of the excellence of the dive operation. There are many other dive resorts in Puerto Galera. Try one of them.
