Comments Third time is a charm. Couldn’t be truer than my third dive at the Ranger Station Yellow Buoy: A whale shark, two reef mantas and infinite fields of hard coral chocked full of several varieties of reef fish, swarming in and out, up and down. I also saw a few white tip sharks and a grey reef shark, along with dog-tooth tunas, jacks, barracuda, oriental sweetlips, big-eyed squirrelfish, clown triggerfish and a host of others. Hard coral formations were endless, punctuated with brittle stars and an occasional anemone nest with smallish true clownfish.

Classic Tubbataha.

I’d dove Tubbataha 10 years ago or so, and was looking forward to returning, albeit on a better boat. (The Siren was terrible; broken A/C in the 5ft. 4 inch ceilinged salon, awkward dive deck, awkward dining table, slippery bathroom floors). So I carefully selected the Infiniti, now owned by Atlantis. A sturdy steel hulled vessel built in 2012, it was well-appointed, safety-oriented and well run. The three Zodiacs were staggered so the dive deck wasn’t crowded nor were dive sites nor meal lines. Good organization, excellent service by the Zodiac crews and my dive guide “Alf” in week 1 and “Jeff” in week two.
