Comments With so many locations for Philippines diving, it was a challenge to narrow down options for my first trip there after decades of dive travel. I ultimately settled on Puerta Galera ("PG"), both for its combination of reef and muck diving, and because the travel to reach PG was less of a pain than other options. I dived there for 11 days and never regretted my choice.

Much of the success of any trip is the planning that occurs long before you head to the airport, and the administrative staff at Scandi was exceptional from my first email inquiry. Responses were prompt, detailed, cheerful, and helpful. They were happy to answer any question, and seemed personally invested in my decision to choose Scandi. Their online culture played a huge part in my travel decision, and that culture of helpfulness and hospitality was evident upon my arrival and throughout my stay.

Scandi Dive Resort is located at Big La Laguna Beach, the “quieter” zone of PG. Nights were blissfully quiet. Non-divers might get restless there, as there really isn’t much else to do besides diving. There are some PG land/waterfall tours offered, although I couldn’t drag myself out of the water long enough to do one. I walked to town once – a full thirty minutes up some steep hills and down again. On the return, I hired a tuktuk for 200 PHP, or about $3.50 USD.

I chose Scandi’s 1-bedroom suite, situated above the dive shop and just below the restaurant. My room location was supremely convenient, and although I could hear sounds above me early in the evening, things quieted down by 9 or so, making it a non-issue for sleeping.

The suite has a living room/kitchen area with a private, oceanfront terrace (with a single chair and a drying rack), and a separate bedroom with ensuite bath. I had ample storage space with an armoire/closet (including security safe), bedside tables with drawers, and a table/bench that was a perfect place to park my small pieces of luggage. The bed was quite comfortable, with decent sheets and very good pillows. The bathroom was basic but fine. Be forewarned: the entire bathroom doubles as the shower stall. I believe this is fairly common, and while it initially seemed inconvenient, it quickly became a non-issue. The floor was properly sloped, with good drainage; I was surprised at how quickly it dried. There was a wall-mounted hair dryer in the bathroom, which is a real rarity at dive resorts. Towels were good quality and plentiful, and a “pool towel” is also available at the front desk.

In the living/kitchen area, a small frig served as minibar, with cold beers ... Subscribe to get the full story. For Subscribers Only  Active subscribers continue reading here
