Comments I chose the Emperor Elite and its southern route to St. John and Fury Shoal based on my travel agent’s recommendation (Reef & Rainforest) as one of the better boats in the Red Sea. I had never been there so didn’t have anything local to compare to, but the boat was well laid out and comfortable, although it holds 26 guests. The price of the trip was amazing and included nitrox and transportation from the airport. I was the only American onboard, and we had a mix of mostly friendly English speaking Europeans. The group helped make the week special and I hope to dive with them again. The dive guides/managers were quick to recognize diver skills and arranged dive groups appropriately. 2 guides were almost always in the water with the 2 groups who wanted to be guided, and I was assigned to an experienced group of 3 (we are all dive instructors) and we dove on our own. We saw lots of great corals (one dive had some of the best coral I’ve seen anywhere in the world) in stunning coral canyons and swim thru’s. We saw occasional sharks, healthy fish life, friendly napoleon wrasse, octopus, mantas, turtles, crocodile fish, and dugong. We went thru fabulous caverns, snorkeled with a pod of dolphins, and went on as many night dives as we wanted to. Elphinstone was a wonderful dive site. The dive guides/managers (Hany & Amr) were excellent, responsive, and fun to be around. The rest of the crew was mostly stoic and not friendly... not bad, but not friendly. They were helpful when needed, but certainly didn't smile. The food was varied and plentiful and the boat had a pastry chef so the desserts were impressive.
