After hearing people raving about Saba on a trip to Belize, and deciding that we wanted to try it, we called Dive Saba Travel for information on renting a house and diving. Beth was great - very personable - really took time asking us questions to be able to make a suggestion on where we should stay, and which dive operation to use. She nailed in on the head with Flamboyant Cottage/ Sea Saba combination. Flamboyant Cottage was the perfect location for our vacation on Saba – it was a cute little Saban cottage that made the vacation special. We were looking for someplace quiet, relaxed and private; this cottage fit to the bill to a “T.” It’s located in a private little community just a short walk from Windwardside – close enough to town for an easy walk down to the grocery and restaurants, but far enough away that we felt like we were in our own private retreat. The view from the front porch is to die for – looking out over the blue Caribbean Sea with Statia, St. Kitts and Nevis in sight. On our non-diving days we kicked back by the private pool and sunned ourselves on the deck. It was quiet – no traffic, no noise, and hardly anyone around at all. The noisiest thing about the location was the tree frogs at night! We cooked in a few nights, the kitchen was well-equipped and had everything we needed to put together good meals, though being on vacation the temptation to walk into town to the restaurants usually got the better of us. The reataurants were amazingly good and reasonable - very surprising for such a small island. Another big surprise was Sea Saba. We have dived all over the world, and found Sea Saba to be one of the best we have ever encountered. From the greeting, to the gear handling (we never touched our gear after the first day other than to put it on!)to Mel and Lynn's meeting us at the taxi in the morning to tell us what restaurants were having specials that evening and offering to make reservations for us while we were diving, to the crew's friendliness, and ultimate professionalism. The boat rides were max 15 minutes, and every day, we were put on a boat that was uncrowded and had us diving with people of our experience level. We saw a little bit of everything. We are not photogs, but were with several on the boat who were thrilled with the photo opps, and the facilities to review film and clean cameras on board. The pinnacles were in our top 10 dives ever, and we have done close to 1000 each. We couldn't recommend a destination or overall experience more. From the first phone call to Beth, to our ride back to the airport with Garvis to go home, we felt like we were locals and friends with everyone! We already booked our trip back next year! Don't wait to try this gem. |
