The operation between Julianas hotel and Sea Saba was like clockwork. Pick ups and return rides all on time. Dive gear delivered to the shop before first dive, and returned, rinsed and dried on last day. My only complaint about the the dive operation was the boat we were on for the first 2 days. Apparently one of their regular boats was away being serviced, so we were put on a charted fish boat. Capt and his boat were nice enough, but it was not set up for diving, horrible ladder for exiting, although Capt took our gear from us in the water after seeing our difficulties exiting. On our 3rd & 4th day, we were on one of their regular boats which was a huge improvement. Diving is a little different than most of the other Caribbean sites because of the volcanic geography. The reefs were healthy, but everything looks kinda brown because of the lack of white sand around the island. DM's were friendly but not much help finding any critters. They seemed to jump in and go about their own dive, not really "leading" except to get us back to the mooring line. Fairly large number of small and medium size fish, lots of eel s and rays. I saw the largest concentration of turtles of ANY dive location I've visited, anywhere! Turtles, turtles everywhere! One nurse shark seen but no other sharks all week. Accommodations & dive packages were reasonably priced, and getting there about the same costs as any other destination in the Caribbean. I highly recommend both Juliana's and Sea Saba, with a few shortcomings, it was still a smooth and efficient operation, and the diving was pretty good. I'm not sure I will return to Saba, only because there are too many other places still to try! Its definitely worth going to at least once. Restaurants within short walk of the hotel were all great, and hiking in the mountain rain forests on Saba are very popular. |
