Comments Just a single day diving with Dive St Vincent, 2 morning dives and a night dive, all we could manage on our short trip. We were some of the first visitors since covid, just us diving and a couple of other experienced underwater photographers who have dived with this operation for years. Boat left from the Young Island dock a couple of minutes walk down from the Paradise Beach Hotel where we stayed. Slightly unusual requirement not to leave anything of value on the boat, since everybody on the boat was diving. Really appreciated being asked by our dive leader DJ what we wanted to see, in our case the small creatures that have made St Vincent unique among Caribbean dive destinations. At this request DJ's expression lit up, obviously crawling around the sand and peering under rocks hunting for minute creatures is one of his favorite activities. Unfortunately, heavy rain the night before prevented us visiting a classic muck dive site up the coast, which is adjacent to a river mouth, so instead we went to a couple of sites just west around the coast - Steps and Turtle Bay. First site was a rocky reef with sheer walls and overhangs dropping to sand at 20 m, with a flat top scored with gullies around 12 m. Lots of hard and soft corals, spectacular gorgonians on the walls and overhangs, and great diversity of colorful sponges. DJ immediately found a brilliant red frogfish resting on an equally brightly colored sponge, evidently it had been there a few weeks. Second site was Turtle Bay, a gently sloping reef with sandy patches and small coral bommies, each of which was a small universe of life. We spent both dives moving very slowly, inspecting every inch of the reef, periodically congregating when someone found something notable, mostly DJ and our underwater photographer companion. Second dive finished in the shallows, a mantis shrimp in a yellow sponge, rock-flipping revealing a few crabs and flatworms. Wonderful to spend such a relaxing time in the company of two such knowledgeable people who evidently so enjoyed spotting and sharing the reef's more obscure and bizarre creatures.
Third dive was a night dive with dive leader Cally, just off Young Island, a few hundred m from our hotel and the dock. A sandy bottom with Caulerpa at around 12 m depth, interspersed with small coral and sponge outcrops. Couple of octopus hiding beside the remains of their prey, several sponge-carrying crabs, lots of sleeping fish, King Helmet eating an sea urchin, Luria cinerea patrolling on the sand, and a cephalaspid (Navanax gemmatus) at the end of the dive. Once again, amazing diversity of crustaceans, and the kind of dive where you see something different every time.
