Comments Our first dive trip abroad since covid. Dive Bequia's owner Cathy was very responsive and helpful while we were booking our trip, finding out about quarantine requirements etc. The 48 hr quarantine on arrival (for vaccinated travellers) that was in place when we booked our flight (the reason we stayed in the 'bubble resort' Bequia Beach Hotel) was fortunately removed by the time we arrived, but we should have been able to dive anyway after receiving a negative covid test on arrival. The dive center and dock are about 7 mins by taxi from Bequia Beach Hotel, and are located in the bay near Port Elizabeth. The dive boat has room for maybe 8 divers, and although I got the impression we were some of the first divers to visit for a long time, business picked up rapidly during the few days we were there. Anyway, small groups of divers made for relaxing diving, with dives sites 15-20 mins from the dock - some days the boat took out divers to do a single dive and brought them back to the dock before heading out again for the second dive.
All the dive sites were along the western side of Bequia Island, both north and south of Port Elizabeth. Dives usually started at a shallow-sloping reef or sand around 10 m, then gradually dropped, often ending at a wall, to depths of 20 m. Most dives involved swimming more or less continuously to keep up with the guide/group, which slightly complicated photography and I personally was frequently low on air near the end of the dive, requiring the last 10 mins or so to be spent at shallower depths. Hard and soft corals were in good condition, and the canyons, boulders and walls of sites such as Flat Rock, Boulders, and Middle Cay were really spectacular, covered in sea fans and with an amazing diversity of colorful sponges. Plenty of small fish including several seahorses, frogfish, butterflyfish, filefish, scorpionfish, morays, spotted eagle ray, trunkfish, relatively few larger fish except at Middle Cay. Also did a fantastic night dive at the Stratmann wreck, which is just a few mins off Port Elizabeth and sits on sand at 20 m. The boat is pretty intact and covered in cup corals, fan corals, sponges, and with numerous hiding places for a great diversity of crabs, slipper lobster, spiny lobster, seahorse, basketstars, and a sleepy hawksbill turtle accompanying us during our safety stop at the top of the wreck.
