Comments Getting There
A non-stop from ATL to PLS. Then a roughly 20 minute twin turboprop flight, with seating for 30 passengers, to Grand Turk. Inter Caribbean offer 2 morning flights and 2 afternoon flites each way. Bohio will book your seat with Inter Caribbean and will most likely schedule you for the last flight of the day. No problems switching to an earlier flite if you land in time. But you do want to at least have a reservation for the last flight in case of any delays. Prior to being able to take a flight to TCI, you must have proof of being fully vaccinated, a negative COVID test done within 72 hours of departure to TCI, proof of travel insurance to cover the cost of evacuation or hospitalization if contract COVID in country, and a physical print out of your travel authorization form you should receive after completing an application on the TCI Assured Travel web site. Read the instructions on the web site thoroughly to ensure you take the appropriate COVID test and obtain the minimum required insurance. I was able to take a rapid diagnostic test at Walgreens and receive results within an hour. I also purchased a travel insurance policy from Allianz Global Assistance when purchasing my ticket online with Delta. Allianz will provide an Embassy Letter on request that summarizes the policy to streamline the application with TCI Assured. I suggest timing the COVID test as close to no more than 72 hours prior to departure and completing the application with TCI Assured ASAP. When I did so, I received an approval email within an hour of submission. Others had to wait until the day after the COVID test before they could compete the application and were stressed waiting for their approval email to arrive shortly before departure. You won’t be able to get on the plane without the approval and the approval expires at midnight on your scheduled day of arrival. Clearing Customers and Immigration was fairly efficient once the approval form, proof of vaccination, and a negative COVID test are presented in physical form. The scenic flite to Grand Turk was quick and we were met at the airport by a taxi sent by Bohio.

The Island and Resort
Grand Turk is a sleepy little island. Bohio is probably the nicest resort on Grand Turk. There is a cruise ship port and some facilities that cater to Carnival cruise passengers, but they are only open when ships are in port. There are other restaurants and bars on the island but they seem to mostly cater to locals and don’t have much atmosphere or energy. The island is heavily populated with wild donkeys which can be entertaining at times. Rent a golf cart for a day to check the island out, but it won’t take more than a couple of hours to do so. There are limited dining and bar options on the island. The Arches/Ridge and the Birdcage are good dining options, and the Sand Bar is probably the best option for a beer with the locals in the afternoon. The entire leeward side of the island is edged with pristine beaches. Bohio seems to have the best night life and restaurant on the island. Bohio is family owned and operated and only has 16 rooms, all of which have an ocean view. Rooms 1-8 are closest to the beach. Rooms are good sized, but simple and a little tired. The breakfasts and lunches included in our dive package were fine for me, but others felt there was a lack of options and the menus got old quickly. Some in our group made trips to the grocery store, about a 10 minute walk away, to keep food and beverages in the mini fridge to supplement the hotel meals and drinks. The family strives to provide a good experience for all guests, but the meals, drinks, etc adds up quickly. The staff are generally pleasant and helpful if tipped well. Although not a massive problem, mosquitos do hang out around the dive shop and bar. Bring bug spray. Bohio will help you to schedule a COVID test for return to the US a couple days before departure. The cost is $60. COVID protocols didn’t seem to be heavily enforced on the island. Grocery stores require masks and some bars, restaurants and hotels logged guest names and proof of vaccination, but for the most part, it was left up each individual on the level of COVID protocols they wanted to practice.

The Diving
The Bohio dive shop is located centrally at the resort. There are plenty of places to hang gear and cubbies to keep your items. Extra dives are pricy at $135 for 2 morning tanks and $90 for an afternoon dive. Night dives are $85. There are no lockers and the gear room is not locked at night. The resort seems safe, but I could understand how guests may get their gear “mixed up with others” and things could go missing. Tank fills were always at 3000 PSI or better and Nitrox is available, but unnecessary. There are rinse tanks for cameras and gear at the dive shop, but none on the skiffs. However most dive sites are just 5-15 minutes away. They do offer free tanks for shore diving, which is a good 100+ yard swim out from the beach, but no night shore dives are allowed. Loading the dive skiffs is done on the beach (there is no pier/dock). The boats are small and have limited shade. It is concierge diving with the guides handling all gear set up, rinsing and storage. The dive guides are laid back and do not enforce any specific profiles. Most dives were around a hour or longer. Almost all the dive sites are located on the leeward side of the island in a national park. Seas were always calm. This is typical Caribbean wall diving with the typical variety of reef life. Grey reef sharks were seen on most dives as they are always looking for a lion fish to be caught and offered by the guides. Turtles were abundant and lion fish were rare. Alien Nation is the best place to look for a frog fish and if you can tolerate a rough ride and large swells, try and bribe a guide to take you to the North East coast where there is more prolific life and excellent topography.
