Comments Do you want to take your family to a clean, quiet, safe, upscale location for a dive trip? Provo is your destination. There are easy flights with many airlines to choose from - you can be there by early afternoon from anywhere in the eastern US without inter-island hops. There is no crime, no litter, and no cruise ship traffic(the reef keeps them out). The 12 mile long Grace Bay Beach with flour-like sand has been rated by Conde Nast as the nicest beach in the Caribbean. Although the huge dollar condos are being built along the beach, the construction really isn't noticeable. There are good restaurant choices, but surprisingly few retail shopping spots - just a few small plazas, which gives Provo a small island charm despite the condo growth. We've never seen so many families on a dive trip.
To stay on the beach, you'll most likely end up in one of the condos. They range from nice to opulent...you can spend thousands per night if you're so inclined. But among the reasonably priced condos, Royal West Indies is the best value. The smallish size of RWI and beautiful gardens give it an intimate, relaxing feeling. It's an upscale resort at a moderate price, nicer than the others in the price range, such as Ocean Club, Alexandra, and Coral Gardens. RWI's on site restaurant, The Mango Reef, is excellent and reasonable priced. Try the conch salad.
Besides the beach activities for the family, there are snorkel trips to the offshore uninhabited islands, kayaking, sailing, and a conch farm with a fascinating guided tour
The diving is a long boat ride but worth it. We saw sharks on almost every dive, including my first hammerhead off French Cay. It's all wall diving followed by a nice 30-50 ft deep reef with good marine life. Dive Provo is a well run operation which handled the Easter Week crowds well. We'll be back next year!
