Comments [Dive Provo is a well run operation. It has 3 boats (all with marine heads) and 2 shower heads for a quick rinse after the dive. Each day starts with a boat safety briefing. There are 2 dive masters aboard and one leads the dives while the other helps divers in and out of the water. They give a thorough briefing of each dive site. Buddy pairs can dive on their own. Non buddies are given neon yellow shirts and they dive with the dive master/guide. Most of the dive guides go very slowly which is great for photographers/videographers. The dive guides try to find critters to point out. The only rub. There’s not much to see if you remember what T&C used to be like. All of the dive sites are at least a 45-60 minute boat ride from the marina.
French Caye looks like a bomb went off. 2 hurricanes have devastated the reef and stony coral tissue disease has taken its toll. Where there used to be 6-8 sharks under the boat, we saw 1 the whole dive. 1 Eagle ray. No turtles here. West Caicos had more marine life and there actually was some hard coral, but the storms and other environmental pressures have reduced the number of critters and corals significantly. Northwest Point was a little worse. The guides did their best to try to make the dives interesting but unfortunately they don’t have a lot to work with anymore. The divers with less than 150 dives thought the diving was great which shows that they have a different frame of reference from me. I shot less than 7 minutes of video over 8 dives.

We stayed at Ocean Club West in Grace Bay. We had a beautiful suite with 2 bathrooms, full kitchen (we used for breakfast and lunch) and a screened in balcony on either end. We had a beautiful view of the ocean and pool from our room. My wife was really happy with the resort. OCW is within walking distance of many fine restaurants, a supermarket, & Dive Provo’s dive shop. However, all of the trips left from one of 2 marinas and unless you have a car, transfers round trip are $20/day.

Everything is very expensive on Providenciales (a loaf of bread was $10!) and dinners at the restaurants we chose cost about $125/ 2 people without drinks.

If you want a really nice beach vacation, Turks & Caicos fits the bill. If you’re an experienced diver, you will be disappointed with what you’ll see here. If you just want to get wet and experience diving, it’s OK. Otherwise, if you want much better diving, head to Roatan or Cuba.

UW Photo Comments [None]Boats have a small tub for cameras, no dedicated photo table. I was only one most dives with a camera bigger than a GoPro (I have Olympus TG6 in housing, on a tray with video lights)so it wasn't a problem. If you have a big rig, you're not going to be happy.
