Comments First a word of thanks to the Explorer operators. We had been booked to go a week earlier but a death in the family prevented us from going that week. I called Liveaboard.com and they said that since we were within the 60 day no cancel period we were out of luck. Make an insurance claim. The next day they got back to me that Explorer would let us move to the following week as they had some openings. I'm really glad it worked out.
Flight to PLS from JFK was a breeze. We flew in a day early and stayed at Ports of Call Resort which was a good place to stay.
The boat sent a van to pick us up at the hotel and took us the 15 minute ride to the boat. The Explorer 2 is a very nice liveaboard. It's showing it's age a little but still very nice. We had a stateroom up on the upper deck which we enjoyed. Comfortable bed and private bathroom. The main lounge and dining area were very comfortable and spacious. The food was very good. My wife is a vegetarian and there was always special dishes for her and everything was delicious.
The diving is very easy. Like most liveaboards you set up your gear once and don't break it down until after the last dive. Nitrox refilled (32%) were done in place. You could either jump off the side or walk down three steps and step off dive platform. Briefings were fun and informative. Most of the dives were 40-80 ft. Plenty of good looking coral and lots of little critters and fish. Reef sharks on almost every dive. Very safety conscious. The staff on the boat were fantastic and always looking to help. After diving was done for the day a full bar was offered with some decent wine and top shelf liquor.
Our fellow divers ( who we had never met before) were all good divers and a lot of fun. The owner of SCUBAradio.com was on the trip and brought along 2 mermaids and a magician. Made for a very entertaining trip. Never saw underwater magic before. It was great.
Highly recommend this trip.
