Comments Three divers went to Grand Turk the second week of July for 10 days. All with over 500 dives and our own equipment.
We had a great time on Grand Turk Island. Stayed at Aqua House which was a short golf cart ride to Grand Turk Diving. Rented a golf cart from Nathan's for our stay rather than a car. That worked great.
Aqua House was a 2 bed/2 bath condo on the beach. Had a few roof leak issues but the beds stayed dry. It only leaks when it rains! Apparently they do not get rains that often so the roof leak had not been addressed for some time. It had all the appliances you need and a great balcony for happy hour sunsets.
Diving with Smitty at Grand Turk Diving was awesome. Chris is the office manager and helped us find our way around the island. Smitty knows the reef like his back yard and led us on some great dives. We were allowed to dive as long as our profile would let us so most dives were over 60 minutes. One of our divers had new equipment and Smitty was patient taking the time to get the gear figured out and the diver comfortable with the gear.
We saw all the regular reef fish including 2 octopus. One octopus was eating a conch and did not mind the photo session. Not many large fish were seen. One shark cruised by.
Dives were usually less than 15 minutes from the beach so surface intervals back to the shop went quick.
We did one night dive with Smitty which was great. He had us turn off our lights and get used to the darkness. We ended up with no lights on for 25 minutes and with Smitty leading we ended up right under the boat. Great dive.
We dropped our gear off at the shop the first day there and left the gear for the entire stay. Rinsed everything off and hung on racks that were brought inside and locked up each night.
Grand Turk is a very comfortable island and we had no problem getting to restaurants, grocery stores, etc. with the golf cart.
This trip was well worth the money. Airlines to Provo were as expected. Caicos Air to Grand Turk was good. They had plane problems and substituted 2 small planes for the larger plane that was supposed to get us to the island. That was good because we were booked on the last flight for the day.
Grand Turk is very laid back and friendly. The restaurants are a good value unless you go to the 2 big resorts. That was a little pricey.
We would go back to this island again. Just hope the larger population of divers will miss this spot so that it retains the small island charm.
