Low Key Watersports runs out of Cruz Bay on St John and provides a solid boat with a friedly and knowledgable crew. Get to the shop early (8:00 AM) if you need a place to park, and do call in advance to reserve a place on the morning boat. Windy conditions were managed by going to protected dive sites. Experienced divers who have been checked out can dive their own profile. Others will be guided by watchful divemasters who sometimes had their hands full with novice or occasional divers. Reefs vary from lovely to kind of ordinary, depending on the site. Only fish bigger than 16 inches in 8 dives was Tarpon, and a fine school of tarpon it was. In all, a pleasant way to pass the time with some good people and decent though not spectacular diving. Shore diving is not a very good option, so stick with one of the boat operators (there are two or three - all good, so convenience will dictate choice). St John has superb dining options in Cruz Bay: Stone Terrace, Zazo's, The Balcony (my favorite), Caneel Bay, Paradiso, Asolare, etc. - you will not go hungry, but your credit card will get a workout. Best snorkeling at Waterlemon Cay, by Annaberg area of national park. Accomodations run the entire range from prosaic to spectacular and are priced accordingly. Plan on renting a jeep, and don't forget to drive on the left. |
