Before the Internet, You Called Bob Goddess to Go Diving

Bob Goddess, 80, the founder of the renowned Tropical Adventures, and once a leading dive travel agency, passed away May 5 at his Fiji Islands home. Tropical Adventures, based in Seattle, represented over 64 live-aboard dive boats and resorts in over 24 countries in its heyday.

Before the Internet, if you wanted to dive internationally, the only way was to call Bob or Carl Roessler or a few other travel agencies specializing in diving. As the Internet began to bloom, he sold Tropical Adventures in 1996 and moved to Taveuni, Fiji, where he organized the Rotary Club, built a library, and instituted projects for clean water, schools, health care, and scholarships.

The family welcomes donations to his final Rotary project, rebuilding a Fiji school lost to Cyclone Winston in 2016. Details at
