Going Deeper than Ever

from the September, 2022 issue of Undercurrent   Subscribe Now

The latest achievement of undersea adventurer Victor Vescovo (He's an American investor, retired naval officer, and space tourist) in his unique two-person any-depth submersible Limiting Factor, is the first-ever human descent to two of the ocean's deepest points: the 29,300 feet deep Yap Trench and the 26,335 feet deep Palau Trench.

Sadly, he recorded unidentified human contamination at the bottom of the Palau Trench, thought to be plastic sheeting.

Before the dives, both trenches were extensively mapped from the mother ship Pressure Drop using the expedition's multibeam sonar system to identify the deepest points and areas of interest to be explored and mapped in detail. In support of the GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project, they and other researchers hope to map the entire seafloor by 2030.
