Tourism brings prosperity to some parts of the world, but tourism can destroy the environment. The proposed $9.8 billion Maya Train railway project is a case in point.
The ill-conceived idea is to daily transport 40,000 passengers to Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula. The plan is to build the railway about two-and-a-half miles from Highway 307, one of the important federal highways in Mexico, crossing over sections of the most extensive underwater cave system in the world - the cenotes - destroying both an essential freshwater supply, the cave diving, and the operators who take tourists to them. The apocalyptic nightmare also threatens cenote dive sites in Tulum.
You can join more than 65,000 people who want to stop this destruction and sign the petition to stop building this railway. Even if you haven't enjoyed the unique experience of diving the Yucatan's cenotes, please add your name to the petition.
