Comments This was a combination trip designed to experience a little of everything. The primary goal was to snorkel with whale sharks north of Cancun/Isla Mujeres, which was a rousing success. The trip was organized and escorted by Shark Diver Magazine with a big assist from Phantom Divers in Playa Del Carmen(PDC).

We used PDC as our base of operations staying at a small hotel called Club Yebo. Nothing fancy but nice clean rooms with lots of deck space to dry gear and good A/C. Also far enough away from the closest nightclub to be quiet at night but only a block from the main restaurant/party street and only a block from the beach.

We did two days of snorkeling with the whale sharks, which consisted of an hours drive to Cancun(leaving at 5:30 AM) followed by a 90 minute boat ride to find the whale sharks. Our organizer used Solo Buceo, which was a very good experience. The second day out we were one of the first boats to find the mother lode of whale sharks, a couple hundred. There were so many that we had our own patch of ocean with no other boats crowding us. There were also several mantas thrown in for good measure. This was snorkeling only and required either a wet suit or life vest for buoyancy although I got away with just using a skin.

This was followed by two days of cenote diving led by Charlie(Carlos) of Phantom Divers who also provided all our transportation for the week and was on all the tours with us. This was a first for me and I would definitely recommend it.

The final two days we boarded the 7:00 AM ferry to Cozumel and met one of Aldora's boats at a dock a short walk from the ferry pier. They are just as good as I remember from my hurricane Mitch shortened trip in 1998. You no longer have to have your regulator converted to DIN to use their steel tanks. On the second day they provided our spear fisherman with a Lion Fish pole, which he successfully used a couple of times. I have a video on YouTube of him feeding one to a Spotted Moray.

The only downside was we didn't leave enough time to relax due to the early morning departures to get to Cancun and Cozumel and no "down days".
