Comments We flew into Cancun so one in the group could dive cenotes on mainland. We went to Cozumel
by ferry. Taxi to the Villablanca Hotel ($7) and dove with Aldora Divers. Other taxi rides into
town were $10 each way, ask about fares first. First the hotel- not really set up for divers, no
rinse tank or outdoor showers (easy fix if they choose to), restaurant was late opening (another
somewhat easy fix, but it is run separately from hotel, so not hotel’s fault). We went to grocery
store after the first morning and ate in room so we wouldn’t miss our boat. Disappointed that
the hotel doesn’t have a water dispenser to fill up water bottles, we used a lot of plastic bottles.
If all the hotels would just do this, they would cut down on so much plastic! The rooms were
fine, clean and comfortable, ours had a small balcony to hang wet stuff-not that it dried, but
helpful. Aldora Divers picked us up right on time every morning at the pier across the street
from hotel. Aldora provides only steel tanks, and big ones at that, so dives were long, 70-80
minutes each. I decided that steel tanks are not for me, but others swear by them and said
they have gone with Aldora for years. They were just plain heavy and cumbersome for me, just
couldn’t get used to them and the longer dives didn’t make up for it for us. Rich, the DM was
great, as was the rest of the staff. We dove at Palancar Bricks (spotted eagle rays), San
Francisco (more eagle rays!), Columbia (Southern sting rays), Punta Tunich (3 splendid
toadfish, spotted moray, a pair of flying gunnards, 2 flounders), Punta Sur (reef shark, electric
ray), Yucab (splendid toadfish) were some highlights. All of the sites had some coral bleaching,
Punta Sur especially bad. Pleased to see coral bleaching at Cozumel is not as bad as Roatan
(dove there same time of year in 2023, bleaching was SO depressing). We missed Scuba
Club’s convenience, restaurant, dive ops and water dispenser, as well as its proximity to town.
Villablanca is a bit far to walk to town.
