Comments This is our second time out with Aldora – the first was 15 years earlier, on a trip to Cozumel. We chose Aldora back then based on Undercurrent info, and though things have changed, they are still pretty unique, and a great operation. They use steel 120 tanks, so you get more bottom time – we averaged 90 minute dives the whole week. Nitrox was well managed on the boat, DM Sherrif tested each tank and showed each diver the results. Another feature is that they do not overcrowd boats. The most we had on any dive was 6 divers (including us). Not sure how many boats they have, ours was Aldora IV, and we saw a couple other Aldora boats going by as we waited for pickup at the Hotel barracuda dock. We stayed in a casita nearby, but the hotel never questioned us about using their dock for pickup. Saved us an additional 10-minute walk in each direction each day. We were lucky, the water was dead calm most dives. The calm allowed us to dive Maracaibo, which (we were told) was often not very accessible due to waves, etc. In any case, it was spectacular, lots of large reef fish as well as lots of swarms of very tiny fish like we saw on (then healthy) Great Barrier Reef. Saw the elusive splendid toadfish on the last day, too. Great trip, highly recommend Aldora. And if you like tacos al pastor, get a cab to Mister Taco. 11 pesos each – that is almost free! La Choza is also a great spot, ask for the Spanish version of the menu.
