Comments Aquanauts uses a small, roofed boat with dual outboards. The captain and crew were very good, friendly and helpful. Our dive master was great. He really knew the area and pointed out lots of interesting fish and critters. He was also ecologically conscious, careful about the reef and picking up trash and fishing weights when we encountered them.

We only had 4 customer divers, making for an intimate experience. Two were mostly into photography on their own, so my wife and I largely had the dive master to ourselves.

We saw an eagle ray, southern sting rays, lots of good sized parrot fish, a moray out hunting, a number of large spiny lobsters, queen angelfish, enormous school of blue runners. In general the fish life seemed to be in pretty good shape. Fan corals showed decent purple color and were not burdened with algae as we had seen in Belize a few years ago. On a side note, the beaches did not have much sargassum, even where they were not cleaned.

We only motored 5-10 minutes out from the harbor to the dive sites, and we did not see anybody else in the water. That said, this was shoulder season (November) but good conditions.

The Omni resort is small and casual. Rooms are large and comfortable, and the staff is friendly and helpful. Their breakfast is very good, and we enjoyed a lunch there by the pool. For meals however we mostly walked to the many restaurants arrayed around the dolphin lagoon and in the port area. We were able to snorkel from shore to a shallow section of the reef with a few fish and corals. Good occupation when not diving.

Puerto Aventuras is basically a large gated community so this is not an ethnic Mexico experience, but it is comfortable with a wide variety of restaurants and shops and feels safe. No need for an all-inclusive resort as we felt like everything we needed was within a few minutes pleasant walk.
