Comments Blue Angel, starting to hit rough waters?

This is my fifth time staying at Blue Angel. My wife's and my requirements for comfort are minimal, as we only care about hot water, clean sheets, safety, and convenient. The Blue Angel set up is incredibly convenient, as the restaurant, hotel, and dock are within 150 feet of each other.

The dive masters and captains are very experienced and did a wonderful job during dives for my wife, two sons and me. I think that last year's hurricane had a positive effect on the reef, as it seemed to me the most vibrant that I have seen. We saw lots of turtles, rays (southern, spotted eagle, and small rays), many schools of fish, lobsters, crabs, and eels. Among the rays, we saw four eagle rays in formation, which was very exciting. I did not see a lot of lionfish, which was welcome.

The concern I have is about the operation's management. The Blue Angel sold one of their boats, which is a business decision that I can understand. However, having one less boat did have an impact on the dive operation, as the operation used to have three boats for the 8am dive, but this year, they had two boats for the 8am dives. My wife and I like to do a two tank dive in the morning and a two tank dive in the afternoon. Since we did not schedule all of our morning dives when we arrived, we missed out on a few morning dives. I would think that a dive hotel with 22 rooms would have more than 12 dive spaces at 8am. If there are two divers per room, then there would be at least 44 divers with only 12, 8am dive spaces.

On the plus side, is that the Blue Angel keeps its dive groups small, so one does not feel part of a cattle boat.

Also one of the boats (Jibarra) seemed to have a fair amount of deferred maintenance, as the fiberglass seats had some cracks.

I am hopeful that this is temporary change and not permanent.
