I had complex travel plans from Cozumel to Xcalak -- dive, ferry, rental car, and 5-hour drive -- and went as planned, until I reached the dirt road along coast for the final 50-km section. Started out slow in sandy sections, became a two-track path, and ended overlooking a span where there used to be a bridge. Turns out that I missed the excellent paved road right to Xcalak. As they told me after I backtracked and showed up at Costa de Cocos after 10p, yeah, the road will be on the maps in another 10 years. Check website, where correct route is detailed. I really liked the place. Diving was good, including reef caves like Punta Sur, small but fast boat, site only 5 to 20 minutes ride, big seas, just me one day and 3 of us the other. However, main attraction is the small resort, Costa de Cocos, on beach, scattered palapas. They are a far cry from the the palapas around Tulum; each has private bath and tile floors. Surfaced intervals back at resort. Dived mornings, and spent afternoons reading in hammock on beach. It started as a place for divers, but now majority of visitors are avid fly fishermen. Would like to return and go out to Banco Chinchorro, about 90-boat ride. Consider Xcalak a respite to the crowds of Cozumel and the cancun coast, perhaps as Cozumel was 25 years ago. |
