Comments DIVES:
Service could not be better for technical divers. This shop can easily service the most extreme dives. I call/email in advance and let them know what I want to do.The owner provides his time and his vast knowledge and makes his recommendations, assisting with all details of the dive plans, plus the logic and risks behind his suggestions. All my dives are tech dives except for the last dive. Day 1:150 ft, Day 2:250 ft, Day 3:300 ft, Day 4 & 5:400 ft, Day 6:150 ft, Day 7: drift dive at 40-80 ft with Nitrox. All days are two dives, except 400 ft dive days. Sidemount diving, multiple tanks and gases. Visibility is 100ft most days but can vary from 40 ft to 100 ft. There is a mild current most days, but it can vary from no current to very strong current. Current usually follows the coral reef. Sometimes, current can be going up or down the coral wall. Swimming left or right will eventually bring you to a place with the opposite direction.
SERVICE:
My dive guide, Roger, was excellent. Always nearby and monitoring our depth, time and gas switches. Support on the boat by Pepe takes customer service to a new level. Helping me with all details of my gear, tanks, checking all hoses, regs, placement of gear, getting on and off the boat. When we are done, he rinses all my gear with fresh water, including inside my BCD and SMB. This is a big boat and when I am ready to get out of the water, I raise my hand in the air and Gioivani backs it up into my raised palm. Big ladder on back of boat.
FISH LIFE:
Very little fish life below 200 ft. Did see a couple reef sharks at 400 ft but they quickly scooted. At Palancar Reef, the coral towers must be close to 100 ft tall. Swimming around and through them must be one of the best coral reef dives in the world. The best fish life is from 40 ft to 100 ft. Do a drift dive a few feet above the bottom at 40 to 80 ft, floating a few feet above the coral floor, moving with the current and not even kicking, watching all the activities happening in fish town. Thousands of small and medium size fish of all kinds, groupers, turtles, moray eels, rays, spotted eagle rays, nurse sharks. In November, no whales, no whale sharks, no dolphins, no sea lions, no manta rays. Go to Playa Del Carmen and do the bull shark dive with Phantom Divers. Get real close to about 6 - 12 bull sharks.
