Comments [NonI must express my dismay with the Concerns about Cozumel review by a reader and their view of fish life. I have been diving Cozumel every year for over 33 yrs over 850 dives. My diving log registers dives from French Polynesia to Central America plus the Caribbean with more dives in Cozumel than anywhere else. I have used several dive shops but for the last 18 years I have used Dive House. Their operation is one of the best organized and professional and the divemaster’s reflect the same professionalism far surpassing any other dive shop I have been with in the past. I have seen them do rescues with divers and even witnessed them assist a diver out of air from another dive group (not Dive House). As to the reefs. The deep dives at 80 feet Columbia Deep, Palancar Bricks, etc. have less fish, it has been that way for a long time. Not sure why, not over fishing, because I never saw any one fishing the reefs in my time but have seen locals’ fish the reefs in Curacao, Bonaire, the DR and Central America. Cozumel is blessed with a current that brings nutrients over the reefs. The dives at 50 to 60 ft are like being inside an aquarium. Eagle rays, toad fish, moray ells, nurse sharks, turtles to grouper. Not sure where the review diver was but Paseo De Cedral and other reefs are loaded with fish, lobster etc. No change here over the years since I have been diving, plenty to see and I have the pics to show. They do have Marine Park officials monitoring the boats but none of them come on your boat to check wrist bands, thankfully. Boats loaded with spears etc. is a farce, I know the locals well, they would never allow that. Cozumel is the #1 dive place in the Caribbean, the locals know how important the quality of the reefs are to their economy. Many other dive locations have to deal with the reality of locals fishing reefs to feed themselves, like or not that is a reality, In Cozumel that does not happen, diving business is too important to the local economy. Plastic straws are a ha, ha moment to me. I live in CA and our politicians spend more time on that when they are blind to meaningful public transportation where it is overlooked, and everyone drives. I believe Undercurrent readers are wrong about a decline in marine life, “increased runoff, sewage, cruise ship visits, warming waters” (I have seen coral bleaching every where but not in Cozumel). Yes, there are many dive boats on the reef, looks like the 7th fleet at times but they maintain separation both above and below the water, respectful. Dive masters do try to keep divers from bouncing off the reef or damaging the reef, the reef is their livelihood and they know it. They are not shortsighted. I think the review in Undercurrent reflects what happens in dive and hotel reviews, the negative reviews get posted while most people that like where they dive or stay at a hotel are just happy with their experience and do not post a review.

Thank you for this review. My husband and I have over 900 dives but have not experienced Cozumel. We chose Secrets and the Dive House in November. Appreciate knowing it is a good choice.
