Comments Dive Mike in Playa Del Carmen (PDC), is a safe and reliable operator. That being said, Mike the owner is looking to sell his business so I only hope that whoever buys it will continue with the laid back, high quality service he currently promotes. We purchased a package of dives that included open water in both PDC, Cozumel, and cenote cavern dives. In PDC and the cenote the ratio of divers to dive master ranged 2:1 up to 5:1 max, except in Cozumel. All the boats were covered so we always had sun and rain protection. All dives were scheduled 2 tank dives. All dives were drift dives. There is definitely a range of diving to be experienced in and around PDC. We saw lots of turtles, barrel sponges, big Tarpons, barracuda, and lots of little colorful fish. We would recommend diving the cenotes for an experience unlike ocean diving.
We were advised that due to the intensive Hurricane season in the Atlantic and Caribbean seas that currents were a “ bit stronger” than usual, at some point that became an understatement. Please avoid Scuba Staff in Cozumel. Our experience was they do not place a high priority on safety nor pre dive communication. They took 8 divers with varying skill and certification levels and did an intermediate wall dive with a wicked current that pulled at your regulator. No problem for 4 of us, but at least 3 of the other divers was bouncing off the coral like a southern California beach volleyball.
Overall, PDC is nice place for beginner and intermediate divers. If you want a Disney land e-ticket ride go to Cozumel. You know perhaps we just might do that next time!!
