Comments [None]This was my 11th dive trip to Cozumel over the last 20 years. For various reasons( less crowded, less expensive, warm water, etc.) I have tried to pick the period in Sept. just after the Labor Day weekend. One of the negatives( I will discuss another later) is the possibility of hurricanes. You can't beat Cozumel for the dollar. Food and beer is cheap and my dive buddy and I like to eat in town at a different restaurant each night. Thus, no all-inclusive and Hotel Cozumel is an easy walk into town for dinner. Our dive package with Dive Paradise and Hotel Cozumel called for 2 dives a day and breakfast. Breakfast at the Hotel Cozumel was excellent. Having stayed at the Hotel Cozumel many years ago, it was noticed by the thread bare bath towels and sliding glass door in the room which wouldn't lock that ownership has let things go. We chose to use Dive Paradise's slow boat so we were limited to not going further south than the many dive options on Palancar Reef. Five out of 6 dive guides were very good but because it was a slow time of year for the dive business, Dive Paradise wanted to give all its employees a little work. This meant having different crew each day and being treated as a first day diver each day. As most of you know, it is much better for the customer to have the same crew each day so they can get to know you and you can get to know their dive habits.
Another problem at Dive Paradise is that if you want to leave your wet suit at the shop to dry( they do have lockers) you must pick it up by closing time. It would be so easy for them to wheel the rack of suits into the shop for over night, but that was not an option. Thus, each late afternoon or early evening we had to visit the dive shop to either put our dry wet suit in our locker or take it back to the room. One final comment I would like to make is that the reefs in Cozumel appear in much better shape than 5 or 6 years ago. It is still fun to let the current do the work and even though it makes picture taking difficult, you can't beat the knowledge that all you have to do is steer and let the current do the work. Obviously, I plan to return to Cozumel my favorite dive spot in the Caribbean.
