Comments [None]How fortunate we were with the weather; calm seas, the strong sun with its rays affording incredible beauty and visibility. The currents were light or non existent. Having read the current issue of Undercurrent, we are fortunate to have Cozumel so close. The soft coral is magnificent as are the hard corals. I've always attributed it to the strong currents that keep this area so very clean. The sponges have shapes that are magical. They have been worked by the currents. They are gigantic and plentiful. Sadly, there aren't the fish that one should see. There is simply too much overfishing. I didn't see a single hogfish. There are few grouper; but happily one seen was at least 4 1/2 feet. There are even few barracuda. The toadfish are now in mega villas. They have adapted. We did see 5 nurse shark on a single dive on Cedral Wall. There were few lion fish above 100' and the ones encountered are small. There were many turtles and even two loggerheads. We've always hired a private boat with Scuba Du for our photography. Jorge, the owner is very accommodating. Jose Luis has been our guide for many years. Being a dive guide is not a job it's a way of life for him. He has a great love for Cozumel, the marine environment and divers. This was a particularly special occasion in that our 11 year old granddaughter completed her open water certification. She dove with Abraham and he was amazing with her - patient and caring and most of all fun. Interestingly enough, my husband and I began "warm water" diving in Cozumel in 1988 after being certified in Montana. Our children, likewise, began diving in Cozumel. Scuba Du now has 3 generations. If I were to have one complaint it would be about a dive master that passed us with his 10 divers trailing behind. As I had a finger on a sponge to patiently wait for them to pass, the guide began chastising me for touching a sponge. I watched as his divers kicked the reef with their fins and grabbed on to whatever was available. No, there wasn't a guide at the end of the "line" to curtail their harmful activity. I am a firm advocate of reef preservation and using great care in not touching those things that can definitely be harmed; but some guides in Cozumel are becoming too empowered without realizing they need to watch their own groups more carefully. They equate having a camera with reef destruction. El Cantil is an ideal place to stay. It is on the water. The grocery store is across the street. The rooms are cleaned daily. Albert, the person that had the vision to construct the condominiums, showed us the 3 units that replaced his restaurant, La Prima. They are single bedroom units; but very well done. He is presently converting his home into additional condos. Le Chef has expanded and moved one door down. I asked if they'd do a lobster tail dinner and they obliged. It was amazing! Their lobster sandwich is still a favorite. The pork or shrimp fajitas at La Choza are a must.
