Comments Every Winter in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico (across the Channel, 30 minute Ferry ride from Cozumel) a group of pregnant female Bull Sharks arrive, most probably to give birth to their babys. As soon as dive operators start seeing them close to shore, a big happening starts with divers passing the word and flocking asap to get a firsthand look at this occurrence.
You take a small boat to about 200 meters from shore, less than a 5 minute ride and get into the water as a group. Previously the dive operators have fed some fish to the sharks to keep them interested in this area. As soon as we jump into the water, we start seeing them. Depending on your luck, up to 12 can appear at a time and sometimes they will swim very close to you (watch my video on YouTube by searching for Mario Mizrahi Bull Sharks).
The depth of the sandy place will vary from 70 to 90 ft. I did this 2 days in a row (Dec 1st and 2nd, 2011) and saw 6 and 10 sharks plus some remoras and a turtle.
The sad part is fishermen form nearby Puerto Morelos upon hearing of the sharks arrival promptly look for them and fish them out of the water to sell them in their market. Authorities have been powerless to stop them and thus the story ends every year, until they'll come no more...
