Comments All-around, I still find Cozumel the best destination for North American divers. Fairly easy to get to, reliably good dives, great viz, variety of dive sites and depths, lots of fish, nice town (San Miguel). This was my 7th trip to Coz in 11 years.

I did not indicate a resort name because we chose to stay at a comfortable hotel in San Miguel (we had 7 rooms on various floors). This allowed us to enjoy intervals and meals at the many fine places to eat in town. Plus, since we were there during the observances of Dia de los Muertos, we experienced a lot of the local culture.

3P continues to show why they are a great op. Small boats — limit 10 divers — are uncrowded. DMs have lived on Coz for decades and really know these currents and reefs. Thanks to Servando, Jose, and George, plus Tiburon piloting and Julio in the shop! Not many frills onboard for those that need them, but great set up for us.

We had scheduled to dive all week, but the marina closed due to high winds the second half of the week. Still, we got in 8 dives over 2 1/2 days, and the students in our group (1 AOW, 1 OW) got in all their requisite dives in that span. Tres Pelicanos was great about processing refunds for the cancelled trips, and ensured that the students were taken care of for special sessions for their certs.

Viz was typically 100+ feet; temps about 26-28C. Some of us were fine in a rash guard, others in a thin wetsuit with hoodie. Many stunning queen and French angels, triggers, snappers, barracuda, chromids, butterflies, files, drums, trumpets, grouper, crabs, lobsters, plus eels, rays, turtles, a bat fish, and of course, the Cozumel toadfish hiding in their holes. We dived Palancar Horseshoe, Columbia “Normal”, Cedral Wall, Yucab, Tormentos, and the C-53 wreck.

Besides the unfortunate dive cancellations due to the closures, the only negative is how crowded Coz can get. We counted 35 dive boats at Palancar one morning, and at least 5 mega-cruise ships tied on the piers. Crowded sites create a little confusion at the surface when you end a dive in currents and choose to diverge from the DM.
