The best part of diving in Kauai during the month of February was the dive operation. Linda Marsh, a dive master and owner of Bubbles Below is professional, cordial, and an excellent guide under water and above water(in the boat) giving pre-dive information about the wild life you will encounter when below. Her knowledge is vast and makes the diving that much more interesting. The opportunity to see whales "up close" exists, but only if you happen to be in the right spot at the right time. Bubbles Below will make an effort to put you in that place at the right time. Schools of Spinner dolphin surrounded the boat at times. Plenty of turtles and many of the fish you see are endemic to Hawaii - there just aren't as many in both variety and quantity as you would find diving the Carribean. Unfortunately the coral is sparse and not many variety. There are few sponges and flora, so it is pretty colorless except for the fish. My advice is to make your trip to Kauai more than just a dive trip because there is superb hiking and drive-to vistas with dramatic beaches. The topography is spectacular. Take advantage of the island's offerings and it will be a great trip. I rated the large pelagics low because I did not encounter any except for a few white tipped sharks in 6 boat dives, although I have been told they are there in large numbers. Again you have to be in the right spot at the right time. You will see many spouting and breaching whales from a distance and if you happen to be in their swimming trajectory, they will get very close. |
