Comments The shop seemed nice and all contact was via email and very quick. The dive at Black Rock was easy and beautiful. The DM was less than ready for diving.
First, the good: We did a night shore dive at Black Rock, just north of Lahaina. Parking is super easy as there is free parking near the Shops and the entry point is just off of the sidewalk, by the golf course. Exit is equally easy and right next to the parking. Once you do it with a guide, just rent tanks and keep doing this dive - it was that good.
All the usual night creatures were out and hunting. What made this a lot of fun was seeing the dozens of eels, of all types, out hunting. We witnessed three successful hunts. Octopus was out hunting down a slipper lobster. They both dove into a hold in the coral so I did not get to see the end of the chase. Lots of shrimp and other creatures about. One very large turtle sleeping under a ledge.
The bad: Our young Dive Master/leader was very nervous and had a hard time staying on topic at the shop. My buddy had to ask 4 times to get his rental wetsuit. When we got to the beach to unload our gear, we found that he packed my buddies suit, but gave him the wrong size fins (by a lot) and two left boots. He brought the other diver the wrong amount of weight. OK, switch things around and we got ready. When we were ready, he discovered that he forgot his mask. So we waited for him to run back and see about a mask. Once in the water, he seemed to need to make up time and darted off. Knowing that it would be a short shore dive in 30 feet, we let him go. He had to come back and then gave in and slowed down. Again, I would do this dive over and over again, just as a buddy team and skip the DM and his two left feet ....
