Comments	[None]This was my first dive trip to West Maui. Company was recommended by Pauline at Mike Severns who goes out of Kihei. Shore dives were Airport Beach and Mala Wharf. Mala was most interesting with turtle cleaning station. One eagle ray, no mantas like I saw in SW Maui. All big fish gone. Octopus, reef fish, invertebrates including nudibranch. Lots of turtles including a rare large hawksbill. A couple white tip reef sharks. A few whales still audible underwater late in the season as well as dolphin squeaks. Attentive DMs who went slow enough to allow observation of behaviors not just knocking of names and scooting. The usual mix of more skilled vs folks who were beginners or rusty, dives mostly 50 min and 30 ft of water, once to 46 ft. DM attentive to reminding folks to watch their fins and air. DM helped weaker divers who had trouble exiting over shallow boulder areas, caring attitude. Lanai boat dive was another level all together. 80ft vis and max 80 ft depths. Still no pelagics or really large fish but the topography and macro was amazing. DMs Hanna and Victoria focused on slow hovering observation, pointing out critters and their behaviors. They know their stuff. Swim through into amazing lava tube "cathedrals" with crevices and skylight. Seriously well named, similar to the feeling of gothic cathedrals I have visited in France. Victoria had paced and routed the tour to emphasize the most stunning viewscapes. I would go again in a minute. Captain was calm, first dive site aborted due to current so dove Lighthouse before the Cathedral II. Boat comfortable hard hull with marine head, shade, rear ladders, side giant stride entry. Am snack of bagel and fruit during surface interval. Due to Covid, boat capacity reduced. 6 divers and 2 DM so charged semiprivate rate. Very comfortable, exciting and safe boat diving experience with this outfit. Would go again in a minute.

I just looked up this Lanai trip and it seems they are charging $375 for a 2 tank? Is that what you paid? Some of the other operators (Lahaina) seem to charge $299 for a 3 tank. Just wondering...I know Hawaii diving is expensive.

Costs: Fuel for 45 each way trip comes from 3000 miles away. Hawaii taxes tourist trips. Not Like Mex or FL re . covid. Covid reduced legal occupancy on boats. I paid over $400 for two tank trip charged as semiprivate. On EH. 6 divers/2 DM. Paid 280 for two tank Lanai with Dive Maui the day before. Aborted. Boat engine failed. High ratios , i think 6:1 not sure how it was legal but boat was open IRB with no head. Got $ back with freebie dive led at boatramp by DM who did not check air of clients and harassed an octopus with metal probe. I would not recommend Dive Maui. Hope this helps.

I suggest shore diving west Maui for the lower cost (around 150 for two tanks/two sites). This is especially true if turtles are your "thing". Mala Wharf has gobs of turtles. Entry/ exit ok, some modest surge or small rocks.
