Comments This was my 10th consecutive year diving with Fathom Five. See my earlier reports for more details of boat (six-packs). Weather was unusual for this time of year, but they told me it had been crazy since January. Large swells and wind on some days made conditions poor and the dives were cancelled the day before or that morning when the crew went down to the harbor to check conditions. I only got in 5 days of diving in three weeks, but I was glad I wasn't with a dive operator who insisted on taking divers out in poor conditions, both above and under water. Visibility was about 40-50 the first few days of July due to wind, rain the previous week. Despite that, I had some fantastic dives, in one case a slow drift out and back over lava fields with many large schools of fish and many sighting of single rare fish. The guides are very knowledgeable of the sites, and if you ask to to look for something unusual (or just sharks), they will try to find it. On a whim before one dive, I said I'd like to see some bi-color anthias. Sure enough, he said there was one on this site, and after a short swim over a rubble field, we saw a school around a concrete block for an old mooring. With two six-passenger boats, they can book up fast in the summer, so I'd email or call at least two weeks out. Also can arrange for guided shore dives. Advise renting a wetsuit if you don't have your own. I wore a 5 mm (I'm small and don't want to stay down for an hour or so), but some brave people went without one or a shorty.
