Comments Day diving, best suited to divers with some day boat experience. Relatively crowded boats, but really good organization makes it all go smoothly. And individual attention - no "one size better fit all." For example, we told the staff we'd like to set up/change our own gear. Everyone remembered and made it easy; no grumbling. We did a day of two tank dive, a day of "long distance" two tanks, and a dusk + night two tank dive intended to attract manta(s) at night.
Hawaiian undersea topography is mainly rocks, not the corals of tropical Pacific. Off Kona, the bottom is mainly black sand. The water was warm, 81, one degree cooler than it was in Palau the week before. This is warm for Hawaii, and we saw plenty of bleached coral from the heat. Also a 7 foot tiger shark, come north seeking cooler water. Not a lot of big fish, but the variety of triggerfish, butterflies & surgeons is amazing.
The night dive brought in a single manta, probably worth the wait, but surge on the bottom in 50 feet made staying in place difficult.
Crew, aboard and in shops, are experienced, knowledgeable and pleasant. All the boats have hot showers & marine heads; the 2 we saw had good sun cover. We dove nitrox but there's really no need.
We rented a nice house, but plenty of hotels of all grades. Tourist-friendly destination - we'll go back, and Jack's is a high point.
