Comments During my dive trip to the Big Island of Hawaii, I ended up using 4 different dive ops during my stay, each of which had unique features. In common, they all had the policy of no “island time” where Check-in was concerned, the goal was an on-time departure. The DMs at all the shops were mainly composed of veterans, middle aged full-timers to retirees that help part-time. Weather was in the mid-80s every day, and with water temps around 80F, I did not use a wet suit, but I was in the minority. I will review each dive op separately. Note diving in Hawaii is expensive.
Kohala divers is the northern most dive op on the Kona coast, the dive sites vary from OK to nice. Much of this is due to the fact the area is much dryer than further south, so the quantity of nutrients washed into the water is low. I did 2 trips with them, crew was very professional and the 46’ boat was spacious because they never had more than 10 divers on a trip. The boat was equipped with the typical marine head and had a rinse bucket for cameras. The crew will set up your gear, but are not offended if you want to do it yourself. Snacks and water were provided, they had a large dock with a hose, so all gear could be thoroughly washed after the trip. Plenty of parking at the marina, with an overflow lot at the shop across the street. Overall, if you are looking for a relaxed pace, this op is for you.
