Comments Ah yes. The Big Island. A perennial favorite. Easy diving, always good visibility. Easy access to the west coast.
Our favorite is "Two-Step". Interestingly, it's not listed as such in the tour books anymore.
Two Step is at the "City of Refuge", south of Kailua-Kona. Take the signs to "city of refuge" and take a right just before the toll booth.
There's a gravel parking lot owned by the Catholic Church and you can part there for a voluntary $5.00 fee. But there's also free parking right at the water's edge if you get there early. Never heard of any problem with thievery in either place.
To dive two-step walk west over the lava. At water's edge look for two steps in the edge of the lava! You can also make a giant stride entry but the bottom isn't real deep.
Best way to dive is to head northwest from the entry. Ultimately you'll come to the edge of the drop off. You can dive between 30' and over 130' there.
VERY IMPORTANT: There's a new shortcut from the Sheraton toward the two step area. Continue south on Alii drive past the Sheraton. NO NEED TO GO UP THE HILL!
But there's also many other excellent dive sites on the west side of the Big Island.
Macro stuff is pretty scarce at the big island, but there's a wonderful selection of butterfly fish, tangs, eels, marine mammals, etc.
