Comments After a 3 yr. hiatus from traveling and diving, we finally were able to return to Maui for a week.
Sadly, the dive tour company we have used for 35+ yrs recently sold their boat and business. Mike Severns Dive is no longer. Pauline & Andy decided to retire. As anyone who has dived with them knows, they were the best at finding all sorts of critters, fish, animal behavior, etc. Pauline was able to also know when the coral would spawn. The couple who bought the business are owners of Sting J Maui wetsuits & clothing.
Pauline referred me to Maui Dreams dive shop to take us diving. They have a 46' Newton that leaves from Maalaea Harbor daily and offer several destinations for diving. (The dive boat is run under the business name of Maui Diamond Dive Tours)
The boat is clean, well run, and has every safety feature you can think of. I didn't bring my UW camera with me, but I saw that there is a table in the middle of the deck near the stern that I think is used as a camera table when needed. My dive guide, Christine (along with her husband), is the person who purchased the Pilikai (Severn's boat) and the business. She is very personable and stated she is a marine biologist which should be useful for the transition as I know most of Severns' customers liked seeing the unique things that Pauline would find.
The weather when we were there was dry, but extremely windy starting around 11am. We went to Molokini island to dive inside the "crater" and then to the Pali coast for the second dive (good location as the seas were much calmer in this area). On both dives we saw white tip reef sharks, nudis, octopus, various fish, sergeant major guarding it's eggs, eels, etc.
My wife and I tried to snorkel as much a possible, but due to the large swells, the visibility along the coast was not too good until the end of our trip.
One of the things that set Pauline apart from most other dive tours in Maui is that she would go at a pace that made it easy to find and see things. Her clientele appreciated this. As a photographer it made for a lot of great images. I hope the new owners are able to continue this type of diving.
