Comments Diving in Hilo is basically restricted to shore diving which can be a bit challenging, considering volcanic rocks predominant around Hilo Bay shores. Most of the diving is done in different bays around Richardson Beach Park, and it always involves getting through the rocks, and then passing through high waves.
Northern winds make this side of the island very windy, but thanks to streams and rainforest the fishlife is better than around Kona. Most of it is concentrated around lava rocks, where you can always find at least a few big turtles feeding on the reef, and some nudibranchs. This is not the best diving in the world, but if you are in Hilo it's nice to do a few dives and look at wonderful turtles gliding through choppy surf.
As I've mentioned before getting to water maybe sometimes difficult considering rocks and high surf, but with the right guidance you'll be OK. My dive guide was Phillip, who was the dive shop contractor, and he knew everything about all dive spots there. All you have to do is just to heed his suggestions and everything will be just fine.
Hilo Seaside Hotel is basic, but that is all you need there, because it's close to the local park, and most of your time you'll be traveling in a car to different beautiful spots and national parks in the vicinity. All you need is a decent place to sleep and to park your rental car.
Snorkeling in Richardson Beach Park is very good, where you'll see relatively good fishlife and some green turtles.
