Easy airport pickup on arrival. Our bags were picked up and put on carts, just as we got past customs. Cocoview employees met us at the curb and then we waited in the shuttle bus for final driving passengers. The road is now paved all the way to the water taxi to the resort. It felt like about a 30 minute bus ride and less than a 10 minute boat ride.

Bags are delivered to you room, but you could take your dive gear to your locker directly, if you wanted to. Our names were already on our locker spots, which were in the bay behind our assigned boat. The boat crew loaded BCs, regs, and fins and appropriate tanks to our assigned spots on the boat, before each departure. The weight counter is nicely organized, by actual weight(not just the marked weight). They have 1 pound and up weights, in half pound increments. They ran out of 1 pound weights after a few days, but had plenty of everything else.

Everything runs on time and any changes were on the notice board by the office. We enjoyed our boat captain Robert and dive master Gringo. Gringo really knows the dive sites and was excellent at pointing out small stuff. Talking to other guests, they all seemed happy with the dive masters(especially the senior staff). Patty, the dive shop owner has a lot of local knowledge and is also a dive instructor. We were there for two weeks, including one of the weeks of Mickey Charteris’ (Caribbean Reef Life) underwater photo clinics. The week long clinic is free and we really enjoyed it. There is a large air-conditioned photo editing room, with long counters and power outlets.

A boat dive each morning and afternoon, with the first dive a guided reef dive and the second a drop off near the resort. As many independent shore dives as you like. The health of the dive sites varied quite a bit, but there were always a lot photo subjects. We did not see much larger stuff during our two weeks, with the larger stuff being the turtles, nurse sharks, stingrays and eagle rays. The drop off dives on Newman’s and Cocoview walls and the shore dives really make Cocoview unique. You can set your own pace and dive solo if you want to. Having the Prince Albert wreck as a shore dive, is really special. The shore entry and exit to the Prince Albert, airplane wreck, and the two walls are well marked underwater. Large Cubera snappers will follow you around the Prince Albert at night, hunting in your lights. The top of Cocoview wall has some relatively healthy coral and a few nice groups of Staghorn and Elkhorn coral. Be sure to poke around the dock and swim platform pilings for small creatures. I found a nice decorator crab and blue porcelain crab under the swim platform. Guided day or night shore dives are available, as an extra cost option.

Food is plentiful, but I wouldn’t say it’s the highlight of the resort. Willie at the bar is a great bartender and has the coldest bottled beer I’ve had in the tropics. They have a few local beers on draft and fresh popcorn in the afternoons and evenings. The dining area and bar are large and screened in. There is a nice open air seating area, just below the bar. Hammocks and lounge chairs are scattered on the docks and a few upstairs above the restaurant. If you need some quiet time, there are picnic tables on Hawksbill Caye. If you need a walk, you can walk the road past all the beach houses, to the end of the “island”. Just be sure to turn around, if you get to the “Beware of Guard Dogs” sign. A different craft vender will be set up everyday, around lunch time, in front of the dining room. The gift shop has all the basics, plus a small selection of spirits and wine. The dive shop has gifts and some souvenirs, as well as dive gear. Mickey’s photo shop has photo gear and a good selection of rental accessories. You can book private sessions with Mickey for gear setup or technique lessons.
