Comments This was my third trip to Cocoview and before we left we planned another in 6 months. It is easy to get to, and easy diving. This resort simply has one of the best operations I have ever visited which is why so many of us return. I completed my 300th dive on this trip.

One of the unique features of their operation is their “drop off” dives. If you are new to the resort you are required to do a check out dive in front of the resort to orient you to the two walls that end out in the “front yard”. Everything is well marked with underwater buoys and has the added benefit of the Prince Albert, a sunken vessel to explore at the end of your dive. The reefs are healthy with lots of soft corals and sponges. At Carib Point there are huge barrel sponges. We saw a few eagle rays and one diver saw a nice sized hammerhead (complete with a photo). Lots of little stuff too including seahorses, yellow headed jewfish, nudibranchs, and frog fish. Large green morays are not as plentiful as previous trips but we saw them free swimming out on the reef during the day, as well as tucked up into the wall (two together in one hole). Calvin’s crack yielded a bait ball of silversides (always special), and Mary’s Place is one dive you should not miss. Lots of crab, lobster, and reef fish as well.

All meals are buffet and there is plenty of variety. My dive buddy has digestive health issues and the resort worked with her to provide her what she needed for the week. Each evening there is a happy hour including all you can eat popcorn as well as an appetizer such as mozzarella sticks with a (not spicy) jalapeño ranch dipping sauce. Another night was chicken wings. You get the idea.

The morning boat dive is at 8:30am and you off gas aboard. After completion the boat is driven back towards the resort where they drop you off on one of the two walls and you make your way back on your own. After lunch the process is repeated. So you can easily do 4 dives a day. You can also do shore dives any time of day or night, with a well run system that keeps track of who is in the water. Nitrox is available for $8, so depending on how many dives you do, plan accordingly for the amount which will be added on to your bill (along with your bar tab) at the end of the week.

There is a gift store and dive shop, which you run a tab and pay directly to them at the end of the week. My dive buddy had an small issue with her regulator which they fixed for a minimal charge. I brought $1,000 in cash for tips, nitrox, bar, etc. and came home with some money. That also covered enroute travel and food expenses. I chose not to use a credit card due to the local fees, which I read about but can’t confirm. There is also a nurse on property which we have used for ear issues and this time for sand flea bites. We were here at the end of the rainy season so sand fleas were abundant. More than what we experienced previously. Bring bug spray and use it liberally. I use Repel and had a few bites where I missed applying, but my buddy used something else and got bit pretty badly.

We chose to book one of the beach houses. We booked beach house 8 (which we’ve stayed in previously) because even with just two of us, we enjoy the 2 bedroom, 2 bath house as opposed to a room. The resort owns and operates the two beach houses Cocovilla and Cococasa (nearest the resort) and come with a golf cart. The rest of the beach houses are a separate company (Playa Miguel) that coordinates with Cocoview for your stay. Bicycles are available for the short distance between beach houses and resort or you can rent a golf cart for $30 a day. I walked back one evening and it was lovely. Because we were staying in a house with a full kitchen we arranged with Playa Miguel for a driver to pick us up at the airport and make a stop at the local grocery store for snacks, beer, etc. The US dollar is widely accepted everywhere as long as the bills are not in poor condition.

Closest Airport Coven Hole Getting There Coming from the west coast and avoiding a red eye flight, We chose an afternoon flight with American to Dallas. So much nicer to spend the night in a bed rather than trying to sleep in a plane. Our flight from Dallas left around 10:30am. Unfortunately we chose to fly in on Saturday, the busiest day of the week. The little airport struggles to handle the volume. We will fly mid-week from now on.
