Comments First, the good. And there was a lot of very good. The resort isn’t fancy, but it’s a divers’ paradise. It seemed like we were the only couple who hadn’t been there before! We were picked up in a timely fashion at the airport and taken on a short minibus ride to a pier, then we boarded a small boat to be ferried to CoCo View. The dive lockers are spacious and convenient—very close to the boats, and a short walk to the shore entry, which is a very easy in and out. The orientation the first night after dinner was professionally run and worth the time. The next morning, we went on a shore dive with our boat’s dive master who did a good job making us comfortable with the house reef. We chose only to go on two boat dives and to spend most of the time at the house reef, which is fantastic. We enjoy being able to take our time spotting critters and taking photos, and that’s what the house reef is all about. The boat dives were fine—there was better viz away from the shoreline and all of the dive sites are just a few minutes away. But that’s not why we picked CoCo View. The staff were wonderful—knowledgeable and very friendly. The resident photographer was helpful and professional as well. We were particularly happy with how healthy the reef is—no evidence of bleaching, and the big sponges were intact and not done in by misplaced fins. We only saw two lionfish the entire trip. Food was plentiful, and the bar had a good selection of tropical drinks and local beers.
It's hard to come up with bad things to say. The food wasn’t fancy, and there was some grumbling about it, but we felt like the resort (and the Undercurrent reviews we read) prepared us for something less than a Michelin star experience! The no-see-ums were nasty, but once again we knew they would be there, and we brought (and used) plenty of bug spray. The rooms were quaint, but the shower was great, the bed was comfortable, and the view from the deck (we stayed in a bungalow) was wonderful. There isn’t much to do other than diving, but we did have a very enjoyable trip to a microbrewery on the other side of the island, arranged for us by resort management, on our dry day. Caution—bring lots of US$. You will need to load up envelopes for the staff, captains, and dive masters before you leave. The recommended tips were quite reasonable, but we needed to find an ATM in town! Finally, we were a bit disappointed with the shore diving visibility. Most mornings there was only 20 feet or so of visibility on the Prince Albert, the local wreck. But we soon learned that visibility at the wreck was much better (50-70 feet) in the afternoon, and the visibility on the CoCo View Wall was always much better than on the Prince Albert.
We’re already looking forward to going back some day!
