Comments The owner of this resort is an eccentric individual originally from North Dakota, about eighty years old, with a 25-year-old Honduran girlfriend or wife constantly at his elbow, who had boasted, in his resort bar, that he had never had anything other than an open water certification card, and had dived everywhere in the world with it, to great depths, frequently, and in rough conditions, and saw nothing wrong with that practice. This proved to be quite ironic, as my buddy and I were advised, by his dive shop supervisor, on that same day, that it did not matter that each of us had had 700 dives, had been diving in six different countries, had been to a depth of 130 feet on a number of occasions, and had both been on four one week live aboard scuba vessel trips, because we would be limited to a 60 foot diving depth, for the entire week, due to our both having an open water level C cards. We were further advised that the dive shop couldn’t take us out on the first trip of our first day, as they had “run out of weights”, and no other dive shop on the island was willing to loan them weights. When my buddy and I quietly informed the dive shop supervisor that this was some of the worst customer service we had encountered in 20 years of diving, and that we would feel free to describe it as such in an online review of their shop, the weights, somehow, materialized, and we were invited onto the dive boat, with the understanding that we would not exceed a 60 foot depth. We quietly agreed, as it was his shop, and his rules, which we would respect. Ten minutes later, and 100 meters from the Luna Beach pier, the dive boat engine died, and a dive shop employee on board, a local, privately and quietly admitted to us that the owner had little concern for engine maintenance, and even less concern for his reputation on the island, which had been poor for several years, due to his irritable moods and aggressive business dealings. In a stroke of very, very, very good luck, the dive boat towing us back to the resort belonged to Sueno Del Mar, and, after a 30 second conversation with the skipper of that Sueno Del Mar vessel, we had cut a deal for a week’s worth of diving on his boat, with his dive shop, and we gathered our dive gear, tossed our weights on the pier and abandoned Luna Beach Resort Boat for the Sueno Del Mar boat, and dive shop, for the rest of the week. The same Luna Beach dive shop supervisor seemed somewhat surprised, and asked us where we were going as we policed our gear and headed out, and we simply shrugged our shoulders and politely smiled. We had a wonderful time at Sueno Del Mar for the rest of the week, and we will not be going back to Luna Beach.
