The Good: Located at the East end of the island, far from the crowds of West End (never saw another divegroup the whole week), usually small groups 5-8 on boats, good fills and assistance as needed. Fantastic DM was able to spot a lot of unusual critters for us. He and the boat captain went out of their way to provide a good dive experience. Reef is in very good shape (beautiful untrampeled fans galore, abundant black coral, largest scrawled filefish and porcupine fish I've seen). Rooms were clean and comfortable, excellent maid service, management was accomodating. The Not So Good: Weather was cold and rainy part of the trip, wouldn't go again in January! Viz would probably be better in spring/summer too. The couple with us had been there the year before at the same time and experienced rainy conditions the entire week. Oak Ridge residents have GOT to do something about all the trash in the water, it was a real turn-off. House reef entry was a little tricky to negotiate past the urchins etc but saw a lot of fish and octopus on night dive. Meals were just ok, not very filling altho the servers were attentive. Just before we departed we had crab and it was very good. (We were all glad we'd brought "snacks" from home.) Several of us lost weight this trip! Do the mangrove tour with one of the local long boat owners, it was entertaining and informative. This is a good resort for the non-partying type diver, very quiet, secluded and security was good. |
