Comments We stayed at Posada Las Orquideas. Lovely small local hotel. Spacious room, we had 2 beds & 3 divers, corner room, 3rd floor (up 3 flights of steps) small kitchen in 1 corner. Nice deck out back, with hammocks, connected to other rooms on that floor, so we could pass fish ID books, music, pictures/cameras (and beer) back & forth, enjoyed music played by one young couple.
SeaGrape Plantation Dive Shop was next door, about 1 min walk. They were great. Well run & owned by local family. They put us on the same boat each day. Crew/dive masters knew us, our gear, cameras after first day. About 8-10 divers on each boat. Roatan reef is a protected park. ($10 park fee, paid in cash)
Most dive sites were so close we came back to the dock for surface interval. We had varied weather, some rain & chop, vis was not great, nice schools of fish, some rays & turtles, no big critters. Overall I'd say Roatan more reef fish, better coral. Hawaii better vis & more sharks, rays, turtles.
I had 2 nieces diving with me, their first dives out of USA. The dive masters were very helpful and kept an eye on them. I think their rental gear was included.
The restaurant next door had good food. It was about 1 mile into town of West End with lots of tourists, shops, bars, traffic, etc. The Posada Las Orquideas is just far enough from town to be quiet, relaxing. And close enough to town for younger set to walk. We were there in July, rained a little almost every day. The bugs usually eat me up, and I had only a few mosquito bites. We did take malaria medicine.
Highly recommend Posada Las Orquideas and SeaGrape Dive Shop for relaxing, low key, well run. good value, vacation.

UW Photo Comments Had rinse bucket on boat. Crew was good to hand camera off to you after you got in the water. After 1st day, they knew who had what camera.
