Comments This was our first trip back to Roatan since October 2001. The island is significantly more developed than it used to be. We stayed at Turquoise Bay Resort, which is on the north-central coast. Our previous trips had been to resorts in the West End area. Turquoise Bay is a lovely resort, very peaceful and picturesque. While the diving was good, in calm and clear water, we were disappointed in the lack of marine life. We did not see any sharks (note there was one shark dive offered, with a different dive operator, that we chose not to go on. Those who did reported seeing several sharks), and saw only a handful of smallish groupers and a few jacks. Small tropicals were abundant, though, and only a few lionfish. We saw only a couple of turtles during the week. The dive operation told us that Roatan's dive community is working hard to establish and maintain a marine sanctuary area, end efforts are being made to enforce the sanctuary rules, so hopefully things will start to improve as far as marine life is concerned.
