Comments To begin, let me say that we had an absolutely fantastic time at Utopia Village and U Dive. Our party of four arrived on Dec 22 to find that we had the entire resort and dive boat to ourselves for the first 2 or 3 days – not a bad start! All the staff were very friendly and helpful, and we got to know them fairly well over the course of the week. Thanks Debbie, Chef Paul, Autumn, and Josue (Josh), and Bogden for taking such good care of us and making us laugh.

We learned that Utopia Village is a high end resort compared to most other options on the island, but remember that you are in a reasonably remote part of a third world country. This means that the power will go out, you will put toilet paper in the garbage can, you can not drink out of the tap, and if you forget to pack something, (like bug spray!) there is no 7-11 across the street. That said, the accommodations and resort were very nice and the food was very good. It is a beautiful beach-front location. Our respect for Chef Paul and the owners increased throughout the week as we learned more and more about the challenges they face with respect to sourcing fresh food items and pretty much everything else. Although several guests were non-divers, I’d think twice about booking here is you’re not a scuba diver due to the remote location

Our diving experience was also excellent. They have full valet service so you never have to set up or clean your own gear (unless you choose to do extra shore diving on your own). Bodgen was our divemaster/instructor for the entire week. We’ve dove with lots of different dive leaders over the years, and Bogden has a balance that I like and respect. He’s fun and good natured, but is by-the-book in terms of good dive practices and safety. I appreciated when he spoke to a photographer who was paying more attention to his photos than his buoyancy, and hauled him out of the coral when necessary. He later did a short demo on how to backpedal out of the coral to avoid damage. He loves to dive, and we had many fish ID discussions after the dives were over. The resort and dive company are very integrated, so he is on site and easy to track down if you needed to discuss something. We also appreciate the guys behind the scenes that were hauling our gear and tanks around and dealing with the boat.

The diving was excellent. No whale shark sitings, but we didn’t really expect to see any in December. Lots of fish, including some highlights for me like a feeding octopus, several seahorses, free-swimming moray eel. Lots of reef fish and coral. The dive sites were only a short boat ride away from the resort. The house reef is easily accessible (on calm days), and was thoroughly enjoyed by snorklers and divers alike. Two boat dives are included per day, and afternoon shore diving is optional. We did one night dive.

Don’t forget your bug spray – you will need it for the sand fleas.

Lastly, ask Josue to make you a Monkey La La – you won’t regret it!
