Comments This report covers four days of diving with three different operators. We were staying at Amoray, but since their boat was out for updating we were placed with other operators. We knew this when booking in June and worked with them on choosing the operators we wanted based on the type of diving planned. This “Boarding Pass” system in Key Largo works very well. Gives the diver maximum flexibility. You deal with one operator on the business end and dive with the operator you’ve chosen. I’ve dived with Amoray before and will gladly do it again. Just didn’t work out this time but glad to have Amoray folks as guides since I’d been with them previously.

Amoray resort rooms are clean and comfortable. Almost all have been updated in the past year. The TV and WiFi could be improved, but that’s more for the non-diving folks. Staff is always great and location is perfect.

Day One was with Pirate’s Cove and your basic Key Largo Molasses Reef. Excellent crew. Attentive and helpful. Comfortable boat. Coral not great and not much fish life. Lots of current.

Day Two was four dives with Conch Republic in Tavernier. I’d requested them since most of the KL boats go to Christ statue on Sunday mornings. I’ve done that a couple of times and wanted something new. My dive buddy was my guide from Amoray, Tess, who I’d met on previous dives. She’s a great guide and photographer and finds lots of good stuff. Also an excellent dive buddy and a good person to spend the day with. Jason and Chet were a great crew and Conch is a solid operator. Glad to dive with them again in the future. Through the day we had nurse shark, multiple moray eels (4 on one dive!), Yellow Jawfish, a few moon jelly.

Days three and four were with Horizon Divers. Day three was a double dip on Spiegel Grove. I specifically requested this trip since my last SG trip in June wasn’t great. Superman current throughout. Yes, I know it happens, but still not a good time. This trip was much different and better. Good bit of surface current, again, typical, but basically none below 60’ although it was starting to pick up on dive 2. Buddy and guide was Capt. G from Amoray. He knows this wreck! Very helpful and safety focused. Excellent in-water communication. Saw plenty of the ship (we were on Ball 6) and good fish life including a nice reef shark. Ship was Luna Bay. Crew of Capt JD and Mate Steph were terrific. Everyone kept comfortable and safe throughout.

Day four was on Checca View of Horizon Divers. Bigger boat for main part of the preserve. Another good crew and comfortable boat. Two dives at Elbow Reef, City of Washington and Hannah M. Bell. Kalen from Amoray was my guide for these trips. Another excellent guide and dive buddy. She can really find the small stuff like the Jawfish, Flamingo Tongues, etc. as well as sharks and rays. Also saw my first Spotted Drum.

This is my third trip to Key Largo this year after a decade-plus absence. The reefs aren’t as vibrant and I didn’t see as many big fish. But I was encouraged by the number and variety of juvenile fish on virtually every reef throughout the year. Coral bleaching that was so obvious in February appears to be not as bad now. The water was warm, upper 80s, but the locals said it was much improved over last summer. So there’s hope.

UW Photo Comments Designated rinse tanks for camera gear on all boats. Every crew was good about pointing them out and reinforcing that these tanks were ONLY for cameras. Camera tables, sometimes pretty small, on all boats. No charging stations, but these are day trips.
