Comments I've dived up and down the Keys many times, and find that spending time with Conch Republic out of Islamorada always is worthwhile. The service is quite good, the cost reasonable. The protected reefs are nice--only one lionfish was spotted--and being very shallow, a good spot for beginners. I prefer the artificial reef wrecks, and they'll take you there on the six-pack even if they have only four divers, although this time of year they have lots of business. We did a bunch of dives on the Speigel Grove, always a treat, and a couple on the Eagle on this trip. I wanted to hit the Duane, but a big group wanted the cattle boat to go to the Speigel. Heck, you could dive that big boy a dozen times and not see it all. I do enjoy the Bibb, but no one goes out there much. I've dived with a half dozen operators over the years in the Keys, but Conch is unsurpassed, ask me. Its location on Tavernier Creek means it can hit the Atlantic easily, which isn't the case with some operators on the Gulf side of Key Largo--meaning they won't venture out to the big wrecks much because of the distance. If you want to escape the cold north this time of year, Conch and the Keys are an excellent choice. I am staying at the Tavernier Hotel, which is clean, simple, quiet and not expensive. I'm still waiting (after three days) to see the housekeeper, though. Hmmmmm.
